HEPA Air Filter
Air purifiers are tested measuring their ability to remove airborne pollutants such as tobacco smoke, dust, dander and pollen. The results are measured in what is known as Clean Air Delivery Rate or CADR.CADR is a measure of the number of CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) of air a purifier cleans of a specific material. For example, if an air cleaner has a CADR of 380 for tobacco smoke particles (as the Blueair 501 does), it will reduce smoke particle levels to the same concentration as would be achieved by adding 380 cubic feet of 100% clean air every minute!
Put another way, the Blueair 501 with a CADR of 380 for smoke particles will clean the air in a typical 10 x 12 room with eight foot ceilings every two and a half minutes!

The typical air cleaner traps particles using either mechanical or electrostatic technology. The Blueair 501 traps nearly 600% more dirt than typical air purifiers tested by using both!
The secret is in Blueair's special filter material recently developed in Germany and an ozone-free electrostatic precipitator that charges particles so they are magnetically attracted to the filter material.

To minimize drafts, the Blueair air purifier disperses clean air on three sides through an area six times greater than the average air cleaner, a process called SurroundAirtm. As you can see from the diagram, Blueair also is unique in the way it takes in air from the sides and floor.
Because the HEPASilent technology in the Blueair 501 results in less air pressure to move air through the filter, the 501 uses a very small amount of electricity. On its lowest speed it uses the energy of a 15-watt light bulb and on its highest speed a 70-watt bulb! Most of the 501 is made of steel and the filters are polypropylene. Both of these materials are recyclable and don't release harmful gasses or fibers. And, because it uses about three times less electricity than the typical air cleaner, the 501 is easy on the environment in terms of energy demand, too. The filters are also different from typical air cleaners in that they contain no harmful glass fibers or triclosan. And, because they are hydrophobic (water resistant), the filters cannot be a breeding ground for microbial contaminants.

There are three filters in the unit, which can be changed in seconds. There is no disassembly or tools required. You simply open the unit, slide the useed filters out and replace them. On the first two speeds, it is virtually inaudible. On the third and fourth speeds you will hear the unit operating. However, the way the unit is designed to work is that you set it on the higher speed settings for only an hour when it is first turned on. This provides for accelerated air exchanges to quickly reduce indoor pollutants. The unit is then set to one of the lower settings to provide continuous, practically silent filtration of the room air.
