Frequently Asked Questions
about the Blueair 501 Air Purifier

 How Long Will Filters Last?

The reason people buy air purifiers is to have healthier, cleaner air. Blueair is the very best unit in their room size capacity tested by AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) at providing clean air.

Blueair knows that an air purifier is only as effective as the filters. This is why, in order to maintain incredibly high levels of clean air, the filters in a Blueair 501 need to be changed twice a year.

Blueair feels that other manufacturers often make unrealistic claims about the life of their filters. And while a filter after a year or two may still be providing some level of filtration, it's not providing anything like the filtration you bought the unit for in the first place!

You may hear the unit running--but the filter has become so degraded after a year or two that what you're experiencing is the placebo effect—but not clean air.

Rather than tell you something that's not true, Blueair tells you how often the filters really need to be changed in order to maintain the specifications you bought the unit for in the first place.

Clearly, there is a monetary cost associated with clean air. Clean, healthy environments are what we're all about and Blueair would rather not sell you a unit than mislead you about what it takes to maintain the filtration and clean air you're expecting from us in the first place.

Is the SmokeStop Filter More Effective than
the Particle Filter for Off Gassing and
    Particulate Removal? Which Filter Has
the Higher Content of Carbon in It?

Yes, the SmokeStop filter is much better in reducing gaseous pollutants and odors. The particulate removal is approximately the same for both the particle and SmokeStop filters.

What are the Filters Made of, and Which has
    the Higher Content of Carbon?

Both standard and the SmokeStop filters use the same media.

The SmokeStop filter has a much higher activated carbon weight. The carbon filter in standard filter is made of polyester and carbon. The carbon filter in SmokeStop filter is made of polyurethane foam and carbon.
